Although the Ministry of Education has not released a national curriculum for language purposes, has developed a series of national ESL-oriented activities that are geared towards language learning. These include a Home Study Program for parents intending to enroll their children in English-speaking preschools; a program for teachers encouraging students to take interest in the country's rich European history and culture; and a national literacy campaign that emphasize the importance of writing and reading in both the modern and traditional sense.
As part of its core curriculum, the ministry has also developed and implemented a series of key aspects of physical education. It requires all schools and nurseries to provide a series of physical education activities and exercises, as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle through adequate diet and regular exercise. Schools that do not comply with these requirements risk closure, and teachers are obliged to inform the ministry of any such irregularities so that measures can be taken to remedy the situation. The National Physical Education School is responsible for preparing an entire course on physical education, which is available to students at various levels. This includes both children and adults. At the end of the course, students will receive a diploma which is valid for two years.
The National Teaching Commission also plays an important role in the implementation of the curriculum, in particular in the fields of science, mathematics and health. At its foundation, the commission consists of ten members, five of whom are doctors and one teacher. At the end of every year, the commission conducts a series of workshops and seminars to ensure that teaching system is still on the mark. In addition to its role as an implementing authority, the commission also ensures that the various aspects of the curriculum are being taught in an effective manner, as required by the Council of Teachers of Education, the national educational association.
